So today I revisited this for the first time in ages and realized that we all sort of drifted off.

I feel like reviving it, even if I don't know how to contact half of you. So I'm going to mess around with writing on here.

I'm going to make a long list of replies, spanning multiple subjects, all related to Splatoon. It might work. It might be fruitless. But I'm going to try.

Entry #1.

You know, I say I'm going to do something, and then it all goes to shit. Whatever. I'm still going to try.

So, Splatwoon (?) is on the horizon as a future possibility. I seriously wonder what it will be like if it happens. Like, here we have a sensational game with revolutionary game play. A multi-player for anyone and everyone, a shooter that doesn't involve excess gore and ruined childhoods. Instead, it made them. How could anything - even a sequel - dare to challenge such a masterpiece?

Well, for that, I had to think about where Splatoon fell short, where it messed up, and the things we all wished for at one point or another - and let me tell you, it is both difficult and easier than waking up in the morning - and came up with this.

Multiple characters. I know it's strange, and internally we might be thinking - but wait, Darkford. We've got a customizable system, we've got these inklings. But wait - we don't have Octolings. We don't have a choice beyond skin tone and eye colour. It IS customized, but only on a minimum level - and furthermore, we have no method of separating our competitive and casual lives. We have people out there who perfect the art of Ink Battles, fighting to the top, and never easing themselves into a relaxing Sunday gaming binge because nope, they've got to keep that S+. They HAVE to do their best, at ALL times.

Who wouldn't say yes to a casual/competitive split? Who wouldn't ask for the freedom to play Ranked both competitively and casually? See what I'm getting at?

Point made, I'd also like to bring up customization again. I've always wanted to play as Octolings, even if by now it's blatantly obvious we wouldn't be getting it. Furthermore, not all Inklings are the same. Why not freckles? Why not tentacle-styles? Heck, why not species altogether?

We've got a diverse and unique set of characters. We've got Jellyfish. We've got Octarians. We've even got Shrimp, for Zapfish's sake. Why not let us play as these characters? We've already proven that people enjoy the idea of being an Octoling. Why not have different Squid species, too? Perhaps the Inkling was based ONLY on the Japanese Flying Squid, but it couldn't hurt to have more. Think about the possibilities - the body builds - and shudder in anticipatory glee. Hulking giant squids carrying their rollers on a belt. The standard Japanese Flying Squid, chatting, hanging out in the plaza. Tiny, freckled, Bobtail Squids chatting eye-to-eye with Jellyfish. An adorable Dumbo Squid, ears fluttering, grinning up at the cloaked, purple-eyed face of a Vampire Squid. The possibilities are endless, and the plaza would never have felt so diverse and alive if it were to happen.

Now, I'd like to jump to another subject altogether. Splatfests.

The shock and disappointment that rang through the community when it was announced that the final Splatfest - Callie vs Marie - was indeed the final Splatfest was upsetting for everyone. Many players only went online for the charismatic scenarios. It was sad to see it go, and we can only hope there will be more Splatfests in the sequel, when and if it arrives. I could rant for hours about what made it amazing, but I'll leave it there.

Finally, I want to address a problem that will inevitably be in our future. The current playerbase is strong. We've got players all over the world, students, adults, children. Millions of people play Splatoon every single day. But, without fail, that number will dwindle. People will move on. That's just how things are. So - what will we, lovers of Splatoon now and forever, do if the online matchup system goes down? And don't protest that it won't - they can't fund such a complicated and demanding system forever.

Well, there's singleplayer. That's fun, and certainly is a lot better than many of the singleplayer modes multi-players like Splatoon have to offer. But it's still JUST a singleplayer. There's no telling how much replayability it offers - everyone's too busy making the most of the multiplayer.

So, in a sequel, we'd want to ask for an extensive, inclusive singleplayer. Not just a plaza and a few standard, throw-together levels. Not just a Mario-esque set of levels in an (honestly a bit genius) underground world. No - I'd want exploration. I'd want extension. I'd want something a little bit more than shooting ink on a one-way track.

Think about the newest Legend of Zelda game, Breath of the wild. Look at the wide expanse, the rolling hills. Look at the beautiful scenery, the different and exciting gameplay, and tell me - which squid kid wouldn't want to ink their way from one end of it to the other?

Imagine the rolling hills we imagine finding in Calamari County. Heck, imagine Calamari County itself. Small-town Inkling Land, far away from the hustle and bustle of Inkopolis, a far cry from the one-way streets of Octo Valley (which is honestly far too vast NOT to have its own exploration segment, IMO), far even from the hut on a floating rock that Cap'n Cuttlefish calls home. Imagine streets, NPC Inklings, little homey shops with swaying signs above the door.

Give a thought to having a HOUSE. Starting up Splatoon not in your miniature, barely-noticeable, one-room apartment - and I bet you didn't know that's where your Inkling lived - but in a wooden house, a modest place like the Pokemon games, and leaving out the door to a small lawn and hearing your Anemone neighbour blast music - and don't think for a moment you wouldn't love it. It would be a change, a welcome change. because Inkopolis, for all the sensationalism it offers, is always far too small when you remove yourself from the various stages and upbeat music.

There's a train just behind the plaza. It's got to go somewhere - why not to a new, exciting game?

Darkford out. I'll be back next week.
